Organic Standards

Organic Certification:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has put in place a set of national standards that food labeled “organic” must meet, whether it is grown in the United States or imported from other countries. After October 21, 2002 , when you buy food labeled “organic” you can be sure it was produced using the highest organic production and handling standards in the world. See the USDA’s organic labeling chart.

How is use of the USDA Organic seal protected?

People who sell or label a product “organic” when they know it does not meet USDA standards can be fined up to $10,000.00 for each violation. (USDA’s NOP website, www.ams.usda.gov/nop).

Organic regulations around the world:

USDA National Organic Program (NOP): Any organic products produced, processed, repackaged or imported into the US and sold in the US as organic must meet or exceed the USDA NOP regulations. Please visit click on this link for the USDA’s NOP regulations.

IFOAM, International Federation of Agricultural Movements: IFOAM's mission is leading, uniting and assisting the organic movement in its full diversity. JAS, Japanese Agricultural Standard: Japan’s organic standards.
