Maybe you keep thinking all the time that something bad is going to happen the minute you'll leave the house, drive your car or ride a city bus. How about this coming presentation you have to prepare for the next coming board meeting. Your stomach is tied up in knots, your heart is pounding, your muscles are tensed, you're short of breath , and your palms begin to sweat. You are terrified by thinking that you're having a heart attack or dying for no apparent reason. Do any of this sounds familiar to you, then you most likely are suffering from anxiety and panic attacks. The good news is that you are not alone in this, and it can be treated without any medications and all its side effects. What is
anxiety in the first
place? There're different definitions of it. According to Wikipedia
Encyclopedia: Anxiety is a psychological
and physiological
state characterized by cognitive, somatic,
emotional,
and behavioral
components. These components combine to create an unpleasant
feeling that is typically
associated with uneasiness, fear,
or worry.
Anxiety is a generalized mood condition that occurs
without an
identifiable triggering stimulus. Let’s put this in a common every day language that perhaps will be better understood by a larger group of people; ordinary folks like you and me. Anxiety is a feeling of anticipation of future danger and is triggered by vague threat. Some of us are more anxious than others as a result of situational stress. Stress can be a major contributor, and in some cases it can lead to anxiety disorders. Anxiety can be seen as a positive force for needed change and vital to our survival. Without it we wouldn't be able to sustain in difficult; life threatening situations. Whenever we feel danger, our senses send signals to our brain and then part of our brain helps us interpret and analyze the whole situation producing what is called: the "fight or flight" response. In a lot of situations it can be beneficial, because it helps us to prepare, to be alert and focused on certain things and tasks. Let me give
you an example of an
athlete who anxiously prepares for his biggest competition or a
musician
getting ready to give his or her best performance and the list can go
on and
on. We can say that performance improves as anxiety increases but to a
certain
degree. Once it passes that line it can be destructive resulting in
poor
performance and overtime it will lead to anxiety disorder. Anxiety
comes in different forms such as panic attacks, obsessions, phobias,
and fears.
